Gary Votour’s wife Lynn was diagnosed and operated on for a rare congenital form of bone cancer in her neck. The resultant surgeries went wrong and the surgeon later refused to talk to Gary. Gary and Lynn, his wife had forgiven the surgeon but did want greater understanding of what happened. Upon the suggestion of a medical professional Gary posted an open letter to the surgeon online and was sued in an attempt to be silenced for telling the truth. Since then Gary has dedicated his life to helping others avoid the mistakes he and his wife had made. Gary helps Advocees find second opinions, give truly Informed consent, protect their autonomy while hospitalized, mediate conflicts with providers, assist with discharge planning and support end of life decisions. He does all of this with only one goal – To improve the hospitalization outcomes of his Advocees by being their personal Fierce Advocate.
